Like any other floor, marble flooring is highly vulnerable to spills, stains, moisture, mildew, hard water, and mineral deposits that can transform your luxurious flooring into a dirty and destroyed mess. Even more than other floors, marble flooring is sensitive because it’s made of a softer material that’s more sensitive to warping, dirt, and other damage. Removing the grime, debris, and other dirt from your marble floor is a careful and necessary process that requires particular cleaning methods in order to perfect. Luckily, our team has tested and developed several foolproof methods, and provide you with the best way to clean marble floors, ensuring your marble floor is undamaged, shining, and sparkling clean once again.

A Warning: Do NOT Use

Marble is an extremely soft and sensitive stone that absolutely should not be used with any acidic cleaners. Do NOT use any abrasive cleaners or materials such as scrub brushes, vinegar, lemons, citrus acids, scouring powders, or bleach on marble surfaces because you will etch, scratch, or ruin your marble in irreparable ways.

Regular Maintenance Cleaning

Marble floors can be kept very clean with regular maintenance and cleaning. The more frequently you clean your marble floors, the healthier your overall floor will be. However, you don’t have to scrub the entire surface of your marble flooring every time you clean it (and in fact, you shouldn’t, because that can damage your marble). The best way to regularly clean your marble floor is through routine dusting and dry mopping. Especially in surfaces where your floor is exposed to dirt and grit (for example, near a door or in a hallway that gets common use), you’ll want to keep an untreated dust mop on hand and mop down your entire surface between one to three times a week.

If you want to add even more protection to your floors, consider adding rugs or doormats to your flooring, especially near points of entry, to try to limit the amount of dirt that’s being tracked onto your floors. These rugs will absorb the dirt that’s being tracked in and limit the potential for etching or other scraping into your floors. Shake these rugs out away from your marble flooring about once a week to ensure the best health for your rugs.

Monthly Deep Cleaning

You should schedule a deeper cleaning for your marble flooring about once a month or so. However, you’ll have to be careful with what you clean with. The best cleanser to use on your marble flooring is something gentle and soapless if possible. The more neutral your cleanser, the better. If you’re struggling to find one, look for cleansers with pH around 7- and make sure there’s no acid or acidic ingredients in your cleanser before you apply it. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and wet (but not soak) your entire marble floor. Then, grab another spray bottle or bucket and fill with your gentle cleanser. Apply with a soft mop and gently mop the entire surface of the marble floor. Finally, take a soft microfiber cloth and carefully dry your entire floor- and be careful not to miss any part of the floor! Water sitting on marble can oxidize and cause damage or discoloration to the flooring, so be sure to thoroughly dry every area to prevent longer term damage to your marble flooring.

The Stain and Scuff Removal Method

For particularly stubborn stains or discoloration, there are a few stronger cleaning solutions you can mix together to try to treat these. Try to treat any stain as soon as you see it, because the longer it sits, the longer it has to soak in and permanently stain. Blot stains up (not rub) and flush immediately with water and mild cleaner (phosphate-free detergent will work well here), then wipe dry. That should take care of most immediate surface stains, but we also understand that sometimes stains have the chance to dry in before you can remove them.

For seriously heavy-duty or set stains, you can mix 12% hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia for a powerful cleaning solution that will dissolve most heavy-duty stains. However, be careful that you’re only mixing ammonia and hydrogen peroxide- ammonia can produce a toxic gas when mixed with other household cleaners like vinegar. Apply your peroxide ammonia solution to the stain and allow it to sit for about twenty minutes before flushing with water. If you notice it’s left some scrapes behind, you can use a commercial marble polishing powder to buff away any remaining scratches. For other scuffs or scrapes, rub a tennis ball over them- we know it sounds silly, but it takes away scruffs and scratches like magic!

Shining Your Marble Floor

Missing the shine and sparkle of your freshly installed marble floor? There’s actually a pretty simple homemade solution to returning your marble to the perfect shine and sparkle it once has. Begin by mixing three tablespoons of baking soda and a quart of water. Create a paste and spread evenly over every marble surface in your home and let sit for several hours. Allow the entire paste to dry thoroughly and then wipe off with a microfiber cloth. Next, take a mop and gently mop warm water over the marble to remove the residue left behind by the paste. Lastly, dry and buff clean with a microfiber cloth. The marble will be shining and sparkling for weeks to come after you polish with this handy trick!
