Shower heads are an essential part in our homes. Our shower heads are being used daily, but we don’t put too much attention to it, and they are usually overlooked when cleaning our house. But that’s really not a good idea since mineral deposits build up causing the nozzle to squirt water in all directions, clogging up our shower head, affecting the shower flow and pressure, and taking off the shine of your shower head.

The Weekly Method:

Materials Needed:

– Empty Spray Bottle

– White Distilled Vinegar

– Water

For routine hassle-free cleaning, simply fill an empty spray bottle half with water and half with White Distilled Vinegar, mix to dilute the solution.

Keep the spray bottle handy and spray your shower head with the solution every week as you are getting out of the shower.

This will give your shower head a quick clean not letting the limescale build up in there.

The Monthly Method:

Handheld Shower Heads:

Materials Needed:

– Container/Bucket

– White Distilled Vinegar

– Old toothbrush

– Cloth

For a hand held shower head, remove the head from the hose, Being careful not to lose the rubber washer when you remove since this stops water from leaking between the head and the hose.

Place your shower head in a bucket/container and completely cover the shower head with White Distilled Vinegar.

Let your shower head soak in the vinegar for 30 minutes to an hour. For best results let it sit for a full hour.

(If your shower head is brass, gold, or nickel don’t let it sit in the vinegar for more than a half hour as it could ruin your finish)

After letting it sit, take it out of the vinegar and rinse with warm water.

With an old toothbrush scrub away any remaining limescale, paying special attention to the nozzle.

Most shower heads have flexible rubber nozzles. You could easily remove mineral buildup by massaging each nozzle with your finger, or gently scrubbing with a toothbrush.

Rinse again with warm water and polish with a soft cloth to get it to shine.

Reattach the head to the hose. Run your shower for around 50 seconds to rinse out any remaining limescale.

Fixed Shower Heads:

Materials Needed:

– Plastic Bag

– White Distilled Vinegar

– String/Cable Tie

– Old Toothbrush

For a fixed shower head which can’t be detached, take a big plastic bag (make sure your bag is big enough to fully cover your shower head) fill it up half with Distilled White Vinegar. For extra cleaning power, add a few tablespoons of Baking Soda to the vinegar.

Place it over the head until the head is completely submerged in the vinegar. Secure the bag around your shower arm with a string or tie wrap. Best is to wrap it with a cable tie so that the bag which is a little heavy will not slip out and fall down. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour. For best results let sit for a full hour . (If your shower head is brass, gold, or nickel don’t let it sit for more than a half hour as it could ruin your finish)

After letting it sit, remove the bag (if you used a cable tie to close, carefully unlock it with a knife). Using an old toothbrush scrub away any remaining residue and run your shower for around 50 seconds to rinse any deposits left inside your shower head.

Don’t Have Vinegar at Home or Don’t Like Using Vinegar To Clean?

Don’t worry, were here for you too! Although most common ways of cleaning your shower head involve using vinegar, there are some methods that don’t involve vinegar and still give you great results.

Method 1: Baking Soda Paste:

In a bowl, mix a 1/2 cup of baking soda with warm water to form a thick paste. If your mixture is still loose, add more baking soda and stir until you get a thicker consistency, and if it’s too clumpy add more water to get a better consistency. Your paste should have a similar consistency to toothpaste. Cover your entire shower head with the paste, follow steps above to create more paste if it doesn’t yet completely cover your shower head.

For a handheld shower, you could remove the head from the hose, (Be careful not to lose the rubber washer when you remove since this stops water from leaking between the head and the hose) and place it in your sink or tub before covering with the paste.

Let it sit with the paste for 25 minutes, don’t let it sit any longer than said time since it could be difficult to remove if it’s sitting for too long. Wash your paste with warm water, if you removed your handheld head you could do it from the sink or bathtub, for a shower head mounted to the wall use a wet cloth and wipe it well to remove the paste as well as any deposits left.

Lastly, run your shower to rinse and remove any remaining paste/deposits which may still be left in the water holes.

Method 2: Coke

This may seem weird, but is actually proven to succeed!

Pour a can of coke into a big plastic bag, place the bag of coke over your shower head and secure it around your shower arm with a string, tie wrap or cable tie.

You can also use this method for a handheld shower head, by removing the head from the hose and placing in a bowl with coke instead of doing with the bag. Let it sit for 30 minutes before removing the bag and disposing of the coke.

Rinse your shower head with warm water, if your head is mounted to the wall use a wet cloth, or if you removed it you can just rinse with warm water from your faucet. Lastly run your shower for around 50 seconds to remove any remaining coke or deposits left in the water holes.

We hope this article helps you in keeping your shower head clean the easy way so that you can have the best shower experience you could possibly get!
